The first crossword puzzle appeared in New York World in 1913. The puzzle creator was Arthur Wynne. This first puzzle was called a “word-cross” puzzle, and they quickly became very popular in newspapers across the US and Canada – being published weekly in such papers as the Boston Globe by 1917 and into the 1920s.

Solving crossword puzzles soon became a popular activity at libraries where fanatics in the early 1920s made such use of the dictionaries and encyclopedias that regular users sometimes had a hard time getting their hands on them. Crossword puzzles became quite a fad in the 20s in America.

Simon and Schuster published the first complete book of crossword puzzles in 1924 and it came with a pencil attached. The book was very popular and helped make crossword puzzles the fad of 1924. This actually inspired a debate amongst earnest American commentators and religious leaders, some of whom were convinced that crossword puzzles were a “sinful waste of time”, that provided only empty, childish entertainment with no redeeming intellectual stimulation. How times have changed!

By 1930 crosswords were no longer the fad they were in the early 20s, but by then they had become a staple of newspaper readers across the country. Virtually every significant newspaper in America carried them. Even the stodgy Times of London started publishing crosswords in 1942.

Puzzle books continue to be published by several specialty puzzle and games publishers and these remain very popular. Meanwhile the internet has spawned a whole new interest in puzzles, as people can now download almost unlimited puzzles of almost any type. Crossword puzzles remain a very good way to improve your spelling and reading comprehension skills, and to improve your vocabulary. No matter where you go online, you’ll find content. More specifically, you will find articles.

So where do these articles come from? Sure, some of them are written by the webmasters who publish them on their websites, but where do the rest come from?

Animal Shelters always need support, but now, during this down economy and continuing housing crisis, animal rescue facilities need more animal shelter support, money and other donations then ever.  Why is this true?  The main reason is that lots of pets are being abandoned by people facing foreclosures.  These people, in such stress that they feel they are fighting for their very survival, often leave a dish of water and some food behind and take off without their pets when moving out of their foreclosed homes.  Because of this, there is a sudden surge of pets being rescued by local animal services and kept at animal shelters.

Ribloflavin, or vitamin B-2, was initially isolated from milk whey in 1879. Originally called lactochrome, it was also once known as vitamin G. Riboflavin is important for energy production, enzyme function, and normal fatty acid and amino acid synthesis and is necessary for the reproduction of glutathione, a free radical scavenger. The water-soluble B factor consists of 2 separate ingredients; one is unstable when heated, while the other remains stable. Riboflavin functions in several different enzyme systems. Two derivatives, riboflavin 5′ phosphate (flavin mononucleotide) and riboflavin 5′ adenosine diphosphate (flavin adenine dinucleotide), are the coenzymes that unite with specific apoenzyme proteins to form flavoprotein enzymes. Most of the flavin coenzyme systems help to regulate cellular metabolism, whereas others are specifically involved in carbohydrate or amino acid metabolism systems. Riboflavin also appears to have a role in fat metabolism.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) is an orange-yellow crystal that is more stable than thiamine. Riboflavin B2 is stable to heat, acid, and oxidation. It is, however, sensitive to light, especially ultraviolet light, as in sunlight. So foods containing even moderate amounts of riboflavin for example, milk need to be protected from sunlight. Only a little of the B2 in foods is lost in the cooking water.

Riboflavin B-2 is easily absorbed from the small intestine into the blood which transports it to the tissues. Excess intake is eliminated in the urine, which can give it a yellow-green fluorescent glow, commonly seen after taking B complex 50 mg. or 100 mg. supplements. Riboflavin is not stored in the body, except for a small quantity in the liver and kidneys, so it is needed regularly in the diet.

How about a stomach exercise you can do while watching TV or sitting in front of a computer at work. This is an exercise that will tighten your abs in a dramatic way in just a few short weeks. Follow it not and you’re likely to get flamed from angry members of the community and even have your accounts shut down.
